5th St. Patrick’s Day 5K Race/Fun Walk

Don’t miss Caroline County’s most spectacular St. Patrick’s Day event! The 5th St. Patrick’s Day 5K Race/Fun Walk to be held on Saturday, March 17, 2012 @ 10:00AM to benefit the continued good work of the Caroline County Human Services Council. Race begins at the Button Factory at 317 Carter Avenue in Denton.

Register EARLY!! Go to www.seashorestriders.com then choose Race Schedule, Upcoming Races to find 5th St. Patrick’s Day 5K Race/Fun Walk. Print out registration forms to complete and mail with your check or choose the link to register online!

Registration will be open race day from 8:30am-10:00am.
Early Registration: $15 through Friday March 11th/Race T-Shirt guaranteed!
Late Registration: $20 after March 11th through Race Day.
Sleepwalker Registration: $25 to stay in bed, no sweat and contribute to the good work of the Human Services Council and its partners.

Awards will be given for overall and master champions and top three male and female finishers in each age group. Also a special award for Best St. Patrick’s Day Spirit Costume!

Beth McCullough, Recreation and Parks, and a host of many local volunteers will again be this year’s race production crew!

First Saturday Guided Walks at Adkins Arboretum

Saturday, March 3rd (first Saturday of the month) 10 am

Explore the Arboretum’s diverse plant communities on a guided walk led by an Arboretum docent naturalist. Explore the bottomland forest and upland paths, meander through majestic beech trees, traverse the native meadows, and follow the narrow Tuckahoe Creekside path. Guided walks are free for members and free with admission for the general public. Tours begin at the Visitor’s Center and last approximately one hour.

Adkins Arboretum Host Seventh Annual Arbor Day Run

Runners, walkers, families and nature enthusiasts are invited to enjoy emerging signs of spring when the Arboretum hosts its seventh annual Arbor Day Run Sat., April 7.

Young runners dart off the starting line at Adkins Arboretum. The Arboretum’s sixth annual Arbor Day Run, scheduled for Sat., April 7, includes a 5K run, a 100-yard dash for kids and a one-mile fun run/walk for families.

The event features a 5K Run, a One-Mile Family Fun Run/Walk and a 100-yard dash for kids. Participants will catch glimpses of spring as they run the cross-country trail plotted along the Arboretum’s network of scenic forest and meadow paths. Registration begins at 8 a.m., with the Kids’ Dash at 8:45 a.m. The 5K Run and Family Fun Run/Walk commence at 9 a.m.

Friday Nites in Caroline presents a Bluegrass extravaganza featuring Flatland Drive and New & Used Bluegrass band on Friday, March 9, 7:00 pm at the Caroline County Public Library in Denton.

Flatland DriveFlatland Drive is a traditional bluegrass band with contemporary styling. Established in 2009, their sound is influenced by the earliest patriarchs of bluegrass music, but they also pay homage to the likes of Lonesome River Band, Bluegrass Album Band and The Seldom Scene. Flatland Drive’s self-titled debut album is composed entirely of original compositions. The members of Flatland Drive – Brad Turner, Alan Rausch, Curt Fox, Lee and R. Collins reside in either Delaware or Maryland.

New & Used Blue GrassNew and Used Bluegrass Band has at its core three members who have been friends since high school – Ed Finkner, Toby Price and Alan Breeding. Jon Simmons rounds out the group. They have played for fun and in various bluegrass groups over the years. In addition to enjoying each other’s bluegrass roots, there are roots of friendship that make the band even more fun. Ed Finkner (sometimes known as Fink Floyd) lives near Longwoods, Maryland and plays guitar and sings lead on many of the songs they perform. Alan Breeding lives outside of Greensboro and plays banjo with the group. Toby Price lives near Preston and plays mandolin and sings lead and baritone. Jon Simmons lives near Greensboro and plays fiddle and sings lead and tenor. New and Used Bluegrass is currently hosting various guest bass players.

Dorchester County Tourism to host informational meeting about the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway, State Park and National Historic Park

Dorchester County Tourism and the Heart of Chesapeake Country Heritage Area invite the public to an update about state and local planning for the 2013 Centennial Celebration of Harriet Tubman.

The meeting will be held on Tuesday March 13th 5:30 – 7:00P.M. at the Harriet Tubman Organization, 424 Race Street, Cambridge.

Topics of interest will include an update on the legislation currently in the U.S. Congress that would establish the Harriet Tubman National Historical Park, an overview of several exciting projects for the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway, and a preview of the groundbreaking plans for the Harriet Tubman State Park.

This meeting is free and open to the public.

The Denton Community Demonstration Garden Initiative will be holding an informational meeting on the garden. Anyone who is interested in getting involved or learning about the project is invited to attend the meeting.

The demonstration garden will be a community public space that showcases edible plantings, sustainable agricultural techniques, and garden ecology. Located by the municipal parking lot at 4th and Gay Streets in downtown Denton, the garden will be a part of Denton’s Arts and Entertainment District’s and will include interpretive components that will enable it to serve as an outdoor classroom. M & T Bank Pledges $25,000 to YMCA of the Chesapeake Capital Campaign and the Caroline County Family YMCA

M & T Bank recently pledged $25,000 to the YMCA of the Chesapeake’s Capital Campaign and the Caroline County Family YMCA. According to Amos Meredith, M & T Bank Vice President, “Although our bank has $80 million in assets, we operate like a community bank. One of our focuses is on supporting education projects and programs like the YMCA of the Chesapeake, which support our youth. M & T Bank annually distributes in excess of $1 million.”
